We keep a short, careful shelf of good things for cats and dogs.

Toys, bowls, grooming, and the occasional splurge, chosen for the animal you pretend you do not spoil.

A small scruffy terrier curled up asleep on a worn linen armchair by a sunlit window at home.
A brown tabby cat standing in a sunlit lived-in living room, tail raised, looking toward the camera.

The cat has opinions about the house, and most of them are load-bearing.

A cat picks its own spot, its own hour, and usually your good chair. A few well made things, something to climb, something to chase, a bowl that suits a particular eater, give all that certainty somewhere to land that is not your houseplant.

Everything on this shelf had to earn its place, which is our polite way of saying we turned down a great deal of junk.

The cats have their own aisle now, held to the same short and careful standard as the rest of the shelf, and it grows only when something genuinely earns the room.
